“Understanding Privatization: Getting Beyond Pro-Con Debates” with Professor Ellen Dannin
January 26, 2012

Many state and local governments, including Pennsylvania, are turning to privatizing government services, assets, and functions. Some hope that privatization will provide cash to financially stressed governments. Other advocates see privatization as a way to provide better services at lower costs. When privatization is considered being adopted, most discussions turn into debates on the pros and cons of it.

On Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Penn State Law Professor Ellen Dannin will present “Understanding Privatization: Getting Beyond Pro-Con Debates” in room 112, Lewis Katz Hall, 333 West South Street, Carlisle, Pa. The event, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Carlisle Area, is free and open to the public.

Dannin is the Fannie Weiss Distinguished Faculty Scholar and professor of law at Penn State Dickinson School of Law. An expert on collective bargaining, labor law, and privatization, she has frequently been invited to give testimony before state assemblies and U.S. Congress. She is currently working on a book entitled “Thinking about Privatization? Who does the work and why it matters.” Before becoming a teacher, Dannin was a trial attorney with the National Labor Relations Board.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
